So honored to be the 100th episode of the Stories with Traction podcast with host Matt Zaun! Thanks for having me on, Matt. I hope this helps those who recognize the need to be intentional in building a strong multigenerational organization. According to OECD, 95% of employers have not implemented explicit strategies to ensure that their workplace is one where every generation feels included. If we are not listening and learning across the generational divide, we are only going to fall further and further behind. And let's be honest, there is incredible value to be gained both personally and professionally when we create space for every generation to thrive.

Millennial and Gen Z employees are rejecting assignments, turning down offers, and seeking purpose.

Here’s what they expect of their employers, according to Deloitte’s latest survey:

Millenials and Gen Z want more than just a job. They want the things that matter to them to also matter to the company they work for.

The value of 20 minutes

When is the last time you stopped and thought about if the Baby Boomers in your life feel heard?

When is the last time you stopped and thought about if the Baby Boomers in your life feel heard?

One of the things we need to remember about Baby Boomers is that many of them have sacrificed a great deal to get where they are today. The world compelled many of them to work long hard hours so they could not only succeed for themselves but also make the world a better place for their children.

Many Boomers are ready to pass on their wisdom to younger generations but they want to feel respected in the process. I've listened to many say, "I want to mentor the younger generation but they just don't understand everything I had to go through to get to where I am today." This sentiment is especially true for Boomer women.

It is fair to assume that younger generations won't ever really understand what it was like for Boomers during that time, BUT they can take time to ask questions and listen to their stories. If you are a Gen Xer, Millennial or Gen Zer imagine what might happen if you took 20 minutes and sat down with a Baby Boomer face to face (this is how they love to communicate) and asked them what it was like for them back in the day? What did they have to sacrifice? And then you thanked them for all they did to carve a path ahead for you.

“The grass looks greener over there.”

Is the grass really greener over there? Sometimes people have to leave to find out how good they really have it.

Many Millennials and Gen Zers are changing jobs looking for the position that best suits their lifestyle or for a working environment that is positive and helps them grow.  Sometimes they might even be leaving so they can acquire the skills they need to eventually end up in the position they are hoping to have in the future.

For many Boomers and Gen Xers, this feels disrespectful and certainly disloyal. Older generations can take this personally and burn the strong bridge they might have with a top performing younger employee because they feel betrayed.

One recruitment strategy companies are using is to work to keep the relationships strong with employees who have left. You may be surprised to see some of those top performers asking to come back as they realize how well you treated them or how much your culture was helping them thrive as an individual. And that the grass was not greener on the other side.

"Hello. Who's there?"

When was the last time you stopped to think about how something as simple as answering the phone in the "right way" can be broadly interpreted across the generations?

When was the last time you stopped to think about how something as simple as answering the phone in the "right way" can be broadly interpreted across the generations?

I wonder how many of us realize that for younger Millennials and for all of Gen Z, they find it fascinating that there used to be one phone per household and that whomever answered the call didn't know who might be on the other end. The caller could have be a parent's boss, the receptionist at the dentist's office, or their best friend. Answering the phone used to be something everyone had to do and we had to learn to do it politely.

One simple reminder for today: Remember that younger Millennials and Generation Z are entering a world of work that is foreign to many of them. The world they have grown up navigating runs counter to the one they are expected to succeed in as a professional. It is important that we don't assume certain skills and intuitions are present in every generation and take time to make sure everyone understands the expectations and your company's "right way" to do things. Rather than just getting frustrated, equip.
