Why the Traditionalist Generation Still Shapes Today’s Workplace

Traditionalists don’t always get a voice in workplace conversations, but their influence is everywhere.

In Episode 2 of GenShift, I sat down with Dave Zerfoss, born in 1945, who grew up on a farm, led Husqvarna North America through major growth, and now coaches CEOs. Listening to him reminded me how much this generation shaped the way we work today.

Traditionalists (1925–1945) were shaped by the Depression, WWII, and sacrifice. That gave them a sense of duty, loyalty, and humility at work—show up, finish the job, and serve the team. As Dave put it, leadership starts with “touching hearts before you ask for their hands.”

What stood out to me:
• Professionalism wasn’t about image—it was about honoring the work and the people you worked with.
• Hard work and consistency built the systems the rest of us stand on.
• Relevance has no age limit—you stay relevant if you keep choosing to grow.

Younger generations often push for transparency and purpose. Traditionalists remind us that those values need steadiness and follow-through to stick.
